My Brother Nikhil... my review

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

(Sob Sob Sob)

I watched this movie again and thought I would post a review of it here.... I have never cried so much in a movie. In one word, I would have to say that this movie is WONDERFUL!

This movie is groundbreaking; this movie has a “realistic” look at a gay couple and handles the subject of Aids with sensitivity – which has never been in any Indian movies.

Story is simple, Nikhil is diagnosed with Aids and his parents disown him. He goes to his partner (soul mate), Nigel. He is treated like a criminal and is locked in a dirty room for months before a lawyer fights for his rights. Then, he has the freedom to live freely and lead a normal life, like any other person. But, he has no parents, no job, and no life. Only support he has is of his beautiful caring sister, Anu (Princess), Nigel (Boyfriend), and Sam (Brother In-law).

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Story doesn’t focus on how or why Nikhil has Aids. Movie focuses on how a family and society reacts to the disease. Nikhil is humiliated, once who used to be a star of the town and now he is an outcast. Movie has more of a documentary touch to it (meaning people speak to the camera about Nikhil).

We can all relate to this movie. We, once in life have had the perfect life but one day everything changes – everyone you loved is gone… This is how I related to the movie. Also, haven’t we done something wrong in our life, that has made are parents embarrassed or mad at us.
Don’t you have a brother or sister who would do anything for you?

Movie is about LIFE!

Movie shows courage, strength, and weakness in all characters.
This movie is filled with beautiful moments ~ just to mention few:

1- When Nikhil’s dad comes to meet him after 2 yrs, Nikhil asks his dad to tell him, that this is all a nightmare and it’ll pass.

2- When Anu comes with a rakhi to Nikhil and the words “agle rakhi mei tumsei ..” – realizing that there might not be another Rakhi for her.

3- When Nikhil and Nigel have a fight and reconcile, then Nigel takes Nikhil to the beach…there are glimpses of the past Nikhil & Nigel hanging out at the beach, which shows a healthy Nikhil… but now, Nigel is holding on to Nikhil…Nikhil can highly walk or stand.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
4-A mother says to her son, I wish you had died when you were born.
5-When Nikhil dies in Nigel’s arms.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
All the actors in the movie act as if they are the characters themselves.

Sanjay Suri as Nikhil, shows his emotions flawlessly. Sanjay plays the role of a man who is gay and in the closet, a swimming champion, a guy who is so pressured by his dad, an artist, and a weak sad, strong, human being. Sanjay is one of my favorite actors and it’s sad that he doesn’t get many roles. Lillette Dubey & Victor Banerjee play Nikhil’s ashamed parents pretty well.

Juhi Chawla -She adds the smile in the movie. She oozes happiness and hope and courage in the entire screen she is present. She is one of my favorite actresses. She stands by her brother when no one is there for him.

Purab Kohli - I personally think, this movie belongs to him completely! He is the best. He is an openly gay man. He portrayed the role of a gay man who is loosing his soul-mate so well, that I had to take a double take as to if this was really happening to him. His eyes expressed more than he even spoke. His smile showed how much he misses his boyfriend. His frustration showed how he is missing having Nikhil by his side now. Like, I said about Sanjay suri, Purab is also an excellent actor – I became his fan right after Supari & Bas Yun Hi. I am looking forward to his future projects.

ONIR, the director, writer, producer
He is the best! He handled the subject of Aids very well. He showed utmost sensitivity and sincerity to a gay subject line. He showed “realistic” issues and realistic characters. I am very much looking forward to any of his future movies.

Music by Vivek Philip is so beautiful and moving that any time I hear just the “la lal lllaaa..” I get a lump in my throat. Lyrics by Amitabh Verma are so beautifully written and are so relevant. Those words will haunt you…
Chaandni Muskuraayeee
Jab Hawa Kuchh Kahe
Samjho merii sadayein
Hai tere saaath mei
Jo Ghana ho fiza mein
Andhera layenge hum sa were tere liye
Le Lei chalei
Although, there are three versions to the song, my favorite would have to be Kay Kay, he sings that song so melodiously.
When Shaan sings the song for Sanjay Suri, the song seems to be very peppy and happy. Then, when K.K. sings for Purab Kohli, the song shows a sensitive side of a lover’s caring nature towards his dying Boyfriend. And then Sunidhi Chauhan’s voice a sense of sadness to the song.

Soundtrack of the movie has several other inspired songs by the movie. If I were to choose to add some more great songs to this movie’s soundtrack, I will definitely have to recommend adding – Pal by K.K. It is a very beautiful song and is so relevant to the movie’s theme. Also another great addition would be K.K.’s Yaaron.

After you see this movie, you’ll feel like someone very close to you just left you..

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE & CD TO YOU ALL! It’s a MUST FOR Everyone! PLEASE GO SUPPORT THIS MOVIE! WE NEED THESE KINDA MOVIES MADE IN INDIA. I, for one, am very very tired of watching “masala” type movies. They are not only annoying but make you feel like an idiot sitting in the theatre watching people cry over meaningless emotionless scenes.

LONDON May 25, 2005 — Filmmaker Ismail Merchant, who with partner James Ivory became synonymous with classy costume drama in films such as "A Room With A View" and "Howard's End," died Wednesday. He was 68.
Merchant died surrounded by friends and family at a hospital, Merchant-Ivory's London production office said.
Merchant, who was born in Bombay but spent most of his life in the West, had been unwell for some time and recently underwent surgery for abdominal ulcers, according to Indian television reports.
Merchant and Ivory, an American, made some 40 films together and won six Oscars four for best picture since forming their famous partnership in 1961 with German-born screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.
Their hits especially E.M. Forster adaptations like "A Room With a View" and "Howard's End" helped revive the public's taste for well-made, emotionally literate period drama.
In an interview with The Associated Press last year, Merchant said Merchant-Ivory films worked because they captured great stories.
"It should be a good story speak about a time and place that is permanent," he said. "It should capture something wonderful with some great characters whether it's set in the past or in the future."
Btw, Did anyone know that Ismail Merchant was gay? I Had no idea...

Searching for Bobby Fisher

I was just watching the news and they were showing recent pictures of Bobby Fisher. Now, I was shocked because I was told or I always thought that he just simply disappeared and died. But just recently, they showed that he lives in Iceland, mainly because he is not allowed back in the U.S. (for playing a game of chess in Yugoslavia).
For those who live under a rock … here’s some info on Bobby Fisher

He is also well known for his eccentricity, unconventional behavior, and accusedly anti-Semitic comments— this, despite his having a Jewish heritage and upbringing. (more)

In your eyes, people can't seem to see anything
because your eyes are covered up by tears! You
are constantly hurt and depressed... No one
seems to understand how you feel because
everyone is scared to get close to you... You
long to be able to reach out and tell someone
everything, and all of your problems... But you
have no one to tell, or they just don't seem to
want to hear what you have to say. You've been
hurt many times that you don't seem to have any
tears left to shed, or if you do, they're an
endless river flowing... You've started to hide
and bottle up all or your problems and
feelings, hoping that maybe they just will go
away... You want company, but at the same time,
you're scared of it. Your sanctuary is your
room where you can just be alone and try to
throw away all of your aching pains. You're
dark and mysterious and people like you for
that reason. Even if you think you're all by
yourself in the dark, someone is always there
with you. Your special someone wants to admit
and show their feelings towards you, but
they're afraid of how you'll take it. Get out
more and enjoy life because, it is far too long
to frown your way through :)

Yeh Dosti...

Okay, so this would be my first “personal” post…talking about me, myself, & I

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Well yesterday, I just realized that I either don’t know the definition of “Best Friends” or my friend doesn’t. I don’t have (or know) that many people that I can call friends, but like people say, ‘It’s better to have a best friend rather than bunch of friends’.
So I have a Best Friend, Payal (Pinky).
We have been friends for almost 7 years. We basically started out being just friends, since I actually had a different friends – who turned out to be the Biggest bitch…(moved on). I think the problem that I couldn’t call Pinky my best friend was because we were just the complete opposite of each other.
She was loud, I was quiet.
She is an extrovert and I am an introvert
She is into fashion and I am not a fashionable person
Anyways…the list goes on….
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
But somehow we found each other’s confidant. I would tell her stuff that I couldn’t tell anyone. I would be most comfortable with her. She had her own problems, so I became a ‘shrink’ for her. She calls my mom – mom – my Mom considers her as her own daughter. She is like family now. She soon got married to love of her life. She is now pregnant (she is only 24). I believe she has experienced so much, while I haven’t had the same share.
She has too many problems with her saas and sasur…. That’s the reason my rule is that my in-laws will have a different Zip Code (actually a different Country) [lol]
Anyways, the reason I am questioning the word “best friend” is because I don’t get her. I believe that if you are in trouble or are feeling sad, she should call or come to her best friend. But Pinky, she would rather call one of her hubby’s cousins and go to their house rather than come to me. So I m just trying to understand, if I even mean anything to her.
She tells me that I am the only one who understands her and I am her best friend.(actually sister)
I guess I am feeling a bit of sadness, since I don’t have any family close by & I consider her my family. While, she has her husband’s cousins and everyone…so she gets busy and involved in them, instead of being with me. Is it right to question my friendship or not?
I mean, I m not gonna break my friendship with her…but I just don’t understand, what am I her friend for,
am I her friend for shopping (even that she likes doing it alone or with someone else),
am I her friend to go watch a movie (which she doesn’t like to so much plus she likes going with her husband) or am I just the friend who is there only when she has time for me.

This is basically me rambling… since I cried yesterday just about this (I am a cry baby – sue me)

Moving on…….

In Memory of Desperate Housewife’s Season Finale (you will be dearly missed...can’t wait till Fall)

Congratulations! You are Lynette Scavo, the

Adventure
You need adventures.
Real life has been very boring for you and you
can't help but dream away. Nothing is exciting
or fascinating in your life and can't
understand why it all is so dull. You like
having fun, but are probably not a bouncing
person because of that. There is a probability
that you either like to read/watch fantasy or
similar genres, or have a creative side that
lets you release your fantasy world.

You're like me! The intelligent loner. You're shy at times but friendly, and you are never weak and always independent. You are incredibly intelligent (wise beyond your years) and have a talent for many things (sports, music, art). You have a kind and warm personality and enjoy the simple things. Like hanging out with friends and watching movies at home. But you're sometimes quiet nature makes you a bit of an outcast and a mystery to people. No matter how pretty you are or smart or athletic, you just can't seem to break into the crowd and be noticed. Don't worry, try to be more outgoing and speak out when you have more to say. Don't hide behind your books and sports and computer, get out there and get noticed. You also have deep desires in life and feel vunerable and alone at times. Don't feel sad either, What helps me to express feelings and dreams that I can't say to people, is through my writting. Maybe you should try.

Ice element
Your element is Ice. This element may seem a little
odd, but this is a side-effect from when the
element of Water gets to hurt. Once you were a
content soul, and happy with life. But then
something happened. Not necessarily on one day,
it probably happened gradually over time. You
lost your will to care and became even more
reserved from the world. People had hurt you in
ways you do not want to remember and now you
isolate yourself from them. You have turned
into an outsider and probably dress more in
black than you used to. Your depression is
eating you up and tearing you apart and the
worst part is that no one is willing to help,
or so it seems. You rarely
seem to be truly happy anymore. Your sad,
distant eyes and constant frown seems glued to
your face and you need a saviour from this
world. You may turn to music for understanding
and sing/scream along in the lyrics to get rid
of some pain. You are not very open about your
problems to your family/friends, and wish that
they would just notice it and make it go away.

You scored as Buddhism. Your beliefs most closely resemble those of Buddhism. Do more research on Buddhism and possibly consider becoming Buddhist, if you are not already.

In Buddhism, there are Four Noble Truths: (1) Life is suffering. (2) All suffering is caused by ignorance of the nature of reality and the craving, attachment, and grasping that result from such ignorance. (3) Suffering can be ended by overcoming ignorance and attachment. (4) The path to the suppression of suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path, which consists of right views, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right-mindedness, and right contemplation. These eight are usually divided into three categories that base the Buddhist faith: morality, wisdom, and samadhi, or concentration. In Buddhism, there is no hierarchy, nor caste system; the Buddha taught that one's spiritual worth is not based on birth.

Note to self: Never listen to favorite songs while Driving

There I was enjoying and driving in my beautiful silver mustang and listening to a cd that I had recently made of all my favorite beautiful songs like Pal - Kay Kay, Le Chale - My Brother Nikhil, and songs by Gulzar and Jagjit songs...Koi Yeh Kaisei Kahei..etc.....
And then called my friend up on my cell and started chattin with her, from nowhere I started to cry (can't remember about what...now?), but I started to cry (not hysterically!)

I look to my left that a cop is right beside me...I am within the speed limit...so no problem there...After 10 mins. of crying on the cell. I start to wipe my tears off and I hear the cop flashing me to pull over. I was shocked...I was driving exactly 55 on the 55 speed limit. What could I have possibly done...the cop comes over and asks, me How are you doing mam?
I say, I am fine ... I wasn't speeding.

Cop: I Know, but I think you are emotionally unstable to drive.
Me: Laughing while wiping my tears off, nothing wrong here sir, I was just listening to a song and it made me cry. I am fine.
Cop: Mam, but I need you to take a deep breath and calm down, before I can let you get on the highway.
thinking...you r kidding wiht me.. I m not even crying hysterically .. just have some tears...
Then I took a sip of water and assured the cop that I am fine now.

Cop: Okay mam, you take care now and drive safely.
Still laughing... Okay Thank you, bye!

The cop followed me for about 15 min. before he took a U turn and went on his way....

Could this possibly the most embarassing moment of my life or no...........?

Anyways...I took this quiz...Which American Best suits you?

Monday Sucks

Well, my days are pretty similar all the time, so to me each and every day sucks, but today (Monday) sucks for special reason....let's take a look:

  • Woke up to my dog barking and sitting on top of me...
  • Saw that my dog pooped on my carpet -- cleaned that -- smell was just too much for me to take, so I threw up (in the bathroom)
  • Then, realized ...ahh! I have a headache now! [someone send me Excedrin plz!]
  • Then watched the stupidest song on t.v [Altaf Raja song --yuck! he makes me sick!]
  • Then cleaned my bathroom (much need cause instead of bathroom stuff I had tons of magazines all over the floor] -- think i m addicted to magazines now!
  • Cleaned my bathroom and realized I have brand new 5 bottles of shampoo (all different), over 40 bottles of nailpolishes, over30 perfume bottles, over 5 big Lotion bottles, over 5 body sprays, over 15 hair clips, over 25 cds (with scratches!), and too many hair brushes.
  • Then I cannot seem to think ... creative mind block... hence, cannot seem to finish an assignment! (Note to self: Learn Photoshop & Illustrator by now Damn it!!)

Well this is just half of the day....can't seem to wait till this day ends!

Oh, btw, I opted for the simple blog background, cause I was unable to figure out how the hell was I supposed post anything on it.....

Edit: I luv these damn quizes!
